Outbound — Crash When Loading Save (Fix Guide)
Step-by-step workarounds for the most common Outbound crash, plus what the Game Pass / Xbox reports actually mean.
Symptoms
- Game freezes on the load-screen progress bar around 80%.
- Crash to desktop with no error window.
- Save slot reverts to the previous autosave on next launch.
Fix #1 — reset the dog companion reference
- Launch the game and stay on the main menu — do not load a slot yet.
- Open Settings -> Companion -> Reset Companion. Confirm.
- Relaunch the game and load your slot.

Fix #2 — disable overlays
Discord, GeForce Experience and Game Pass overlays have all been linked to the rarer 80%-bar crash. Quit all three, then load. If the load succeeds, re-enable them one at a time to find the culprit.
Fix #3 — restore the .bak savefile
Every save slot is mirrored to slot_X.bak in %LOCALAPPDATA%/Outbound/Saves. If both fixes above fail, rename slot_X.json to anything else and rename slot_X.bak to slot_X.json. You lose at most one in-game day of progress.
What about the "Xbox / Game Pass friend" error?
Outbound is PC (Steam) only at launch (platform status). Reddit reports mentioning Game Pass are either mis-tagged or refer to a different game. If you see such an error and you are running Outbound, it is the overlay hook from Fix #2, not a Game Pass issue.

Why does Outbound crash when loading a save?
The most common cause in v1.0 is the savefile containing a stale dog-companion reference after the dog respawns. The game tries to resolve the old reference and crashes. A rarer cause is an overlay (Discord, Game Pass) hooking the load screen at the wrong frame.
How do I fix Outbound crashing on save load?
Step 1 — launch the game without loading a save, then in-menu Companion -> Reset Companion. Step 2 — relaunch and load the slot again. If it still crashes, disable Discord overlay, try a different save slot, or restore the .bak file next to the slot in %LOCALAPPDATA%/Outbound/Saves.
Is Outbound on Xbox Game Pass?
Not officially at the May 2026 launch. The Reddit error about a 'Game Pass friend' join appears to be a mis-tagged report and not an actual Outbound bug.
Why does my friend get an error joining me?
Outbound is single-player at launch. There is no join feature. Any 'join' or 'invite' prompt is either an OS overlay or a misidentified game.
