Outbound Night Survival

The night side of cozy. Heat management, headlight controls, fauna patterns and the safest sleep routine.

Game version 1.0Updated 2026-05-11Platform: Steam (PC)

Why nighttime matters

Outbound is cozy by day and survival by night. Between 21:00 and 05:00 you face three new pressures simultaneously: cold drain (-1 Heat per 30 s), hostile fauna spawns, and reduced visibility. The page below is the consolidated answer to the most-asked Reddit posts about night play.

Heat thresholds

HeatStatusEffect
80–100ComfortableNo penalty
50–80ColdStamina regen -25%
20–50FreezingStamina regen -75%, occasional shiver animation
0–20HypothermiaHP ticks -1 every 5 s; permanent until you warm up

Best night-1 routine (no Stove yet)

  1. By 17:00, return to van. Drop excess weight to the Storage Crate.
  2. Eat 2 berries + drink water — Heat starts at 100.
  3. Sleep at 19:00 sharp in the van bed.
  4. Wake at 06:00, immediately move to gather Coal and build a Stove by 08:00.

Mid-game night routine (Stove + bed)

  • Brew Thermal Tea (+10 Heat / 3 min) before any night outing.
  • Light any campfire within 50m — passive +1 Heat per 10 s while in range.
  • Carry the Lantern (Workshop recipe) — extends visibility from 6m to 18m.

How to turn off your headlights

Many players miss this in the tutorial. Headlights are bound to L: short press toggles low beams, long press (2 s) kills them entirely. Driving with headlights off in the open increases the spawn rate of nocturnal fauna by 20% — useful if you are hunting drops.

Hostile fauna by hour

  • 21:00–23:00 — Boars (Starting Area, Coast).
  • 23:00–02:00 — Wolves (Canyons, Mountains approach).
  • 02:00–05:00 — Cold-pack predators (Mountains edges only).

Common questions

How do you turn off the headlights in Outbound?

Press and hold L (default keybind) for 2 seconds — a short press toggles low beams, long press kills them entirely. On controller, hold the right d-pad. The icon at the top-left shows current beam state.

Is Outbound only cozy in the daytime?

Largely yes — the developers lean into 'cozy by day, survival by night'. Hostile fauna patrol from 21:00 to 05:00, temperatures drop 12 °C, and the soundtrack switches to a tense register. A full Thermal Suit + lit campfire flips it back to cozy at any trust.

What is the best way to skip the night?

Sleep at 19:00 sharp in your van bed — this is before the freeze window opens. A Comfort Bed + Thermal Tea drops the skip animation to 10 s.

Can hostile fauna attack the van?

Wolves and Boars cannot damage the van itself, but they will down your dog companion if it is sleeping outside. Park the van with the side hatch facing a cliff to remove the approach angle.
