Outbound Base Building Tips

Your camper van is both vehicle and home. Good interior layout saves real minutes every in-game day. Here is the priority order that works.

Game version 1.0Updated 2026-05-11Platform: Steam (PC)

Module priorities

Outbound gives you 12 interior slots in the T1 camper van. Fill them in this order for the most efficient early game:

SlotModuleReason
1Workshop T1Gates Solar, Storage and Copper Wire. Must be first.
2Storage CrateFree +12 stacks; mats hoard fast.
3Workshop T2 (Canyons)Unlocks Steel tools, Wind Turbine and Evaporation Rack.
4Comfort Bed+1 comfort; faster night skip.
5Solar Panel Mk1Ends power crunch.
6Water FilterRemoves mandatory lake detours.
7Workshop T3Reinforced tools + Lift module unlock.
8FabricatorT3+ electronics; huge jump.

Mobile vs static base

The game encourages mobility, but you can drop a secondary static base near the Mountains approach once you hit T3 to farm Adamant Metal without driving back. Do not invest T5 modules in it — it’s a throwaway resource node.

Layout principles

  • Place the Stove on the driver side; it vents heat back into the cabin.
  • Solar panels stack efficiency — put Mk2 adjacent to Mk1 for a +5 % bonus.
  • Never block the rear hatch; it’s your resource drop zone.

5 base ideas that actually work

  1. T1 Starter (Starting Area river pad) — Workshop T1, Solar Mk1 ×2, Storage Crate ×2, Comfort Bed. Park east-facing for the +40 % dawn solar bonus. Free Water from the river.
  2. T2 Canyon Workshop (canyon entrance basin) — Workshop T2, Steel Pickaxe / Steel Axe bench, Wind Turbine, Storage Crate XL ×2. Honey-grove access in 4 in-game min.
  3. T3 Coast Hub (East Lighthouse promontory) — Fabricator, Saw Bench, Reinforced Pickaxe + Axe crafted on-site. All three Coast towers within 5 in-game min.
  4. T3 Mountain Outpost (central peaks base camp) — disposable static base. Storage Crate ×3 + Stove. Used for the 2-day Rose Mineral sweep then abandoned.
  5. Endgame Schoolie Super Base (DLC, parked Coast) — Fabricator T3, Reactor Core, 6 Storage Crate XL, Evaporation Rack ×4, Master Comfort Bed. See the van builds page for the full layout.
