Outbound — All 4 Vehicles Compared
Outbound has 4 chassis: 3 in the base game plus the Schoolie from the School Bus Adventures DLC. This page is the side-by-side comparison the carbon-copy "best vehicle" articles never give you.
Side-by-side comparison
| Vehicle | Build Space | Load | Handling | Source | Best for | Biome fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | ★★★ | ★★★ | ★★ | Default | Balanced first-time pick | All biomes (good in all, best in none) |
| Pathmaker | ★★ | ★★★ | ★★★★ | Default | Off-road exploration | Mountains, narrow Canyons paths |
| Big One | ★★★★★ | ★★★★ | ★ | Default | Resource hauling | Coast salt-flats, late-game grinding |
| Schoolie | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ | ★ | School Bus Adventures DLC | Maxed parked base | Stationary in Coast hub |
Classic — the balanced default
The chassis you start with. 3-star build space, 3-star load, 2-star handling. Good in everything, best in nothing. Use it through your first 5–10 in-game hours, then swap once you have a clear playstyle preference.
Pathmaker — the exploration pick
The 4-star handling vehicle. Shorter wheelbase, narrower body, climbs steeper grades safely. Two scenarios make it the obvious choice:
- Mountains — it is the only chassis comfortably handling Mountain switchbacks.
- Narrow Canyons paths — several Electronics nodes are gated behind narrow rock corridors that the Big One physically cannot enter.
Big One — the hauler
5-star build space, 4-star load, only 1-star handling. This is the dedicated cargo run vehicle. Use it for one-off resource gathering trips (Coast salt flats, Canyons electronics farms) and park it back at base. It is not an exploration vehicle.
Schoolie — the DLC powerhouse
School Bus Adventures DLC chassis. Tied with Big One on build space (5★) but unique 5-star load. The trade-off is the same 1-star handling — plus a longer wheelbase that makes parking on irregular terrain a chore.
The veteran approach: use the Schoolie as a maxed-out parked base in the Coast biome, and run a Pathmaker as your daily driver. Two-vehicle play is the late-game meta.
Recommended swap path
- Hours 0–10: Classic.
- Hours 10–20: Pathmaker for Canyons → Coast progression.
- Hours 20+: Pathmaker for exploration, Big One or Schoolie as a parked base.
Common vehicle questions
What is the best vehicle in Outbound?
There is no single "best". Pathmaker is the strongest exploration vehicle (handling), Big One is the best hauler, Schoolie (DLC) wins on raw capacity but suffers handling. New players should start with Classic for balance, then switch to Pathmaker once they reach Coast.
What is the best vehicle for the Mountains?
Pathmaker. Its handling rating lets it thread switchbacks the Big One and Schoolie cannot. The shorter wheelbase also means fewer high-centre stalls on rocky paths.
Is the Schoolie worth buying the DLC for?
If you enjoy the camper-base aspect of Outbound, yes — the Schoolie has 5/5 build space and 5/5 load and unlocks the Coast questline tied to it. If you prefer exploration, the Pathmaker (free) covers most needs.
Can I have multiple vehicles?
Yes — you can own all four chassis simultaneously. Modules are kept in storage when you swap; you replace them on the new chassis at no material cost (the layout resets).
How do I switch vehicles?
Visit a chassis terminal in any biome hub and select the chassis you own. The first swap to a non-default chassis triggers a one-time payment in Scrap Metal.
