Outbound \u2014 FAQ
Quick answers to the questions Steam community is actually asking. All entries below are from real Steam discussion threads, not invented.
How do I get water in Outbound? Is there a water collector?+
Yes — the Rainwater Turbine doubles as a water collector when it rains. For continuous water without weather dependence, park near a river or lake and use the bucket interaction. The dedicated Water Filter module (Workshop Tier 2) purifies any liquid into drinkable water. Many new players miss this and try to drink directly from the river, which costs Health.
My signal tower shows empty blueprints — is this a bug?+
Reported as a bug on Steam discussions. Workaround: leave the tower interaction, drive a short distance away, return, and reopen. Blueprints repopulate. If they remain empty, verify game files via Steam (right-click → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity).
Can I rebind sprint? L3 also pings the map.+
Yes, but the default controller layout binds Sprint and Ping to L3, which causes accidental pings while sprinting. In Settings → Controls → Gamepad, unbind Ping from L3 and reassign it to D-pad up or right-stick click. Keyboard players are unaffected.
Fuel and hunger deplete too fast — can I turn them off?+
Use Relaxed difficulty to slow drain rates substantially, or use the Custom difficulty (world creation) to set Fuel and Hunger drain to zero. Existing saves can change difficulty mid-run from the main menu → Settings → Difficulty.
Is Outbound on Xbox Game Pass and is there crossplay with PC?+
Outbound is available on PC Game Pass and Xbox. Crossplay between PC Game Pass and Xbox is supported for cooperative sessions. See our /is-outbound-crossplay/ page for the full platform breakdown including Steam.
Best location to farm Scrap Metal in Outbound?+
The largest Scrap Metal density is in the Canyons biome around abandoned industrial structures. Drive the southern Canyons loop and you can clear ~25 Scrap Metal per in-game day. Starting Area also has Scrap Metal but in smaller spawns; useful for the very early game.
My roof can only be built upwards — how do I build downwards?+
You install the Lift module (Workshop Tier 2). It raises the chassis and exposes underfloor build slots. Without the Lift, the build grid only extends upward from the chassis floor. See /vehicle-upgrades/ for details.
The upgrade system feels unbalanced — research costs equal build costs. Is this intended?+
Yes, intentional. The reasoning is that you can salvage 75% of materials when deconstructing, so iterating builds is cheap; researching new tech is meant to be a meaningful sink. Several Steam discussions debate this; the developer responded that they are watching the feedback for a future patch.
How do I remove the passenger seat in the bus to free space?+
On the Big One and Schoolie chassis, deconstruct the front passenger seat from the build menu (interact with the seat → hold E for keyboard, hold X on gamepad). Frees roughly 2 grid tiles for storage or a compact bench.
What platforms is Outbound on?+
Outbound is on PC (Steam + Epic Games Store + PC Game Pass), Xbox via Game Pass, and the developer has stated PlayStation and Switch are not currently planned. Wishlists were 1.5M at launch (May 14, 2026).
