How to Use the Axe in Outbound

The most-asked Outbound how-to. Auto-equip, chopping, durability, upgrades and the three reasons your axe might appear "broken".

Game version 1.0Updated 2026-05-11Platform: Steam (PC)

The 30-second answer

 1. Walk up to a Lumber tree.
 2. The F prompt appears (or X on gamepad).
 3. Hold or repeat-tap to swing until the tree falls.
 4. Walk over the dropped Lumber to pick it up.

That is it. There is no hotbar, no manual equip, no separate "use axe" key. The game equips the axe contextually whenever you face a chop-able object.

Axe tiers and upgrades

TierAxeWorkshop LevelTrees Chop-ableLumber per Chop
1Starter AxeNone (default)T1 trees only1–2
2Steel AxeWorkshop T2T1–T22–3
3Reinforced AxeWorkshop T3T1–T33–4

Durability and repair

Each axe has a durability bar visible in the gear menu. The Starter Axe lasts ~80 swings, the Steel Axe ~150, the Reinforced Axe ~250. Durability does not reset with sleep — you must visit the Workshop and select Repair (costs Scrap Metal).

If the F prompt doesn't appear

 • Tree shows a red lock icon — it is a higher-tier tree. Upgrade your axe.
 • No icon at all — the axe is in the van toolbox. Open the driver-side storage panel and move it to your inventory.
 • Icon greyed out — axe durability is at zero. Repair at Workshop.
 • It is not a Lumber tree — decorative trees are not choppable. Look for the "Lumber" tag in your highlight cursor.

Best biomes for Lumber farming

 • Starting Area — highest density of T1 Lumber trees.
 • Canyons — mixed T1/T2; needs Steel Axe to clear T2 nodes.
 • Coast — T2/T3 trees, dense around the lighthouse.

Mountain biome trees are mostly T3 only — do not bring the Starter Axe up there.

Common axe questions

How do you use the axe in Outbound?

Walk up to a Lumber tree until the F prompt appears (X on gamepad). Press F to swing. The axe auto-equips contextually — there is no hotbar slot. Each Lumber tree takes 4–6 swings depending on tree tier and your axe upgrade level.

How do you equip the axe in Outbound?

You don’t — the axe is auto-equipped when you face a chop-able object. If no prompt appears, the axe is still in the van toolbox: open the driver-side storage panel and move it to your inventory.

Why is my axe not working?

Three causes, in order of likelihood: (1) the tree is gated behind a tier you have not unlocked — it shows red on the prompt; (2) durability hit zero — visit the Workshop and repair; (3) you are aiming at a non-Lumber tree — only Lumber trees are choppable.

How do I upgrade the axe?

Workshop Tier 2 unlocks Steel Axe (faster swings, +25% Lumber per chop). Workshop Tier 3 unlocks Reinforced Axe (chops Tier 3 trees and reduces durability drain). Materials: Hardened Metal + Strong Weave + 2 Casings for the Reinforced.

Can I throw the axe?

No — there is no thrown-axe combat. The axe is a gathering tool only. Hostiles need a different weapon.
