10 Outbound Beginner Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
Each of these mistakes costs you about an in-game day. Skim before your first session, or come back when you are stuck.
- 1.Driving the van on day oneBiofuel is brutally scarce until you hit T2. Walk for the first 60 minutes. Most resources you need are within 300m of the crash site.
- 2.Skipping the Saw BenchPlayers miss that planks are a bench recipe, not a hand recipe. Open the driver-side panel — the Saw Bench is the leftmost icon. See /how-to-make-planks/.
- 3.Hoarding CoalCoal is abundant in T1 and worthless once you have Biofuel. Burn it freely — do not save it for "later".
- 4.Ignoring Fiber until you need bandagesFiber is the #2 bottleneck after planks. Strip the riverbank Tall Grass on every walk past. See /how-to-get-fiber/.
- 5.Skipping Workshop T1Without it you can't craft Solar Mk1, Storage Crate or Copper Wire — the three foundations of every later build. Build it on day 1.
- 6.Not facing the van east at duskSolar Mk1 produces 40% more at dawn if facing east. Park before sleep, not after.
- 7.Trying to fight night faunaWolves and Boars two-shot a T1 character. Sleep at 19:00 on night one. There is no reward for surviving the dark in Chapter 1.
- 8.Selling Pearls to the Coastline NPCHe buys Pearls for blueprint pages — you are the seller. Many players come with Biofuel expecting trade.
- 9.Not picking up the dog companionThe stray at the abandoned cabin is missable for the hidden ending. See /companion-dog/.
- 10.Forgetting to sleep before chapter transitionsAutosave triggers after the loading screen, not before. A crash here loses 10 minutes of play.

Common questions
What is the single biggest beginner mistake in Outbound?
Driving the van on day one. Until you have a Storage Expansion and at least 3 Biofuel in the tank, you waste more fuel than you save in travel time. Walk.
Can beginner mistakes be undone in Outbound?
Yes — every bench and module can be deconstructed for 75% of its materials. Outbound is forgiving in that sense; there is no permanent build failure.
Is there a permadeath mode in Outbound?
No. Outbound has no permadeath; the closest is "Survival" difficulty which speeds up resource drain and makes night fauna more aggressive. See /tips/survival/.
